คนบางคนอาจจะมีความเชื่อเหมือนเพลงคัฟเวอร์สุดฮิตในปี ค.ศ. 1994 ของวง Wet Wet Wet ว่า ความรักอยู่รอบตัวเรา หรือ Love is all around

แต่ผู้หญิงคนหนึ่งที่ฉันเพิ่งได้คุยด้วย เธอเชื่อว่าความรักของเธออยู่ที่มหานครนิวยอร์ก รักที่เธอ (น่าจะ) เชื่อว่าเป็นรักแท้รอเธออยู่ที่นั่น ... ขณะพูด ชีวิตเธอได้กำตั๋วเดินทางเดือนพฤษภาคมไว้มั่นแล้ว เธอกำลังจะไปตามหารักของตัวเอง

ร้ายไปกว่านั้น หรือ Love is all around ไม่เคยมีอยู่จริง? มันอาจเป็นแค่คำโกหกคำโต ที่มนุษย์สุขนิยมรังสรรค์ขึ้น เพื่อกลบเกลื่อนความขี้เกียจแสวงหาของตัวเองเท่านั้น?

ฉันชอบประโยคหนึ่งของหนัง เป็นประโยคที่ในวันอันยากไร้ การ์ดเนอร์ได้ตั้งคำถามต่อคำประกาศอิสรภาพของอเมริกา*** (The Declaration of Independence) ที่โธมัส เจฟเฟอร์สัน (ประธานาธิบดีคนที่ 3 ของอเมริกา และเป็นผู้ร่างคำประกาศอิสรภาพ แยก 13 รัฐต่างๆ ของอเมริกาในขณะนั้น ออกจากบริเตนใหญ่ หรืออังกฤษในปัจจุบัน) เขียนเอาไว้ ว่า ทำไมในคำประกาศอิสรภาพอันยิ่งใหญ่ที่เป็นไปเพื่อผลทางการเมือง ที่ถึงได้เอ่ยถึงคำว่า แสวงหาความสุข (the pursuit of Happiness) เคียงคู่ไปกับคำว่า ชีวิต (Life) และ เสรีภาพ (Liberty )?

และที่สำคัญ ทำไมข้างหน้าของคำว่า ความสุข (Happiness) ถึงต้องมีคำว่า แสวงหา (Pursuit) วางตัวอยู่?

หรือจริงๆ แล้ว หนึ่งในประธานาธิบดีที่ยิ่งใหญ่ที่สุดในประวัติศาสตร์อเมริกา กำลังจะบอกเราว่า ความสุขเป็นสิ่งที่เราต้องแสวงหา? อยู่ๆ น้ำตาฉันก็ไหลลงมาเมื่อความคิดแล่นมาถึงตรงนี้

ใช่...ในวันที่ยากไร้ซึ่งความสุข เหลียวมองไปทางไหนก็ไม่พบเจอสิ่งสำคัญสิ่งนี้ บางที มันอาจเป็นหน้าที่ของมนุษย์ทุกผู้คนที่ควรออกแสวงหา

จริงที่ว่า โลกมีคำกล่าวประเภท ความสุขอยู่รอบตัวเรา มันอยู่ในอากาศที่เราหายใจเข้าไป อยู่ในน้ำใจของคนข้างบ้าน อยู่ในดอกไม้ที่กำลังบาน หรืออยู่แม้กระทั่งในเสียงก่นด่าเพราะมันยืนยันว่าเรายังมีชีวิตอยู่

แต่...ง่ายเกินไปไหมที่จะคิดอย่างนั้น ในวันที่เราก็รู้ว่าดอกไม้ไม่ได้บาน และพายุก็กำลังพัดบ้านให้แตกกระจายเป็นเสี่ยงๆ ?

ถ้าวันนั้นคริส การ์ดเนอร์ตายใจว่าความสุขลอยอยู่รอบตัว แล้วไม่พยายามที่จะยื่นมือออกไปไขว่คว้าแสวงหาเพื่อลูกและตัวเอง ผ่านการต่อสู้อย่างหนัก ตอนกลางวันต้องไปฝึกงานเป็นโบรกเกอร์ เรียนรู้ที่จะไม่วางหูโทรศัพท์แต่เลือกที่จะใช้มือกดตัดสัญญาณแทนเพราะมันทำให้เขาประหยัดเวลาได้วันละ 8 นาที จะได้เอาเวลานั้นวิ่งไปจับจองห้องพักในบ้านพักของคนจรจัด (House of Homeless) ให้ทัน เพื่อลูกรักจะได้มีที่หลับนอนในตอนกลางคืนอันเหน็บหนาว

บางทีถ้าการ์ดเนอร์ไม่แสวงหาและสู้ยิบตาอย่างนั้น เราอาจเห็นข่าวพาดหัวพ่อนอนกอดลูกตายอยู่ข้างถนนในซานฟรานซิสโกไปตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 1981 แล้วก็ได้

หรือโหดร้ายกว่านั้น มันอาจไม่มีแม้กระทั่งพาดหัว หรืออาจไม่มีใครรับรู้ว่าพวกเขาจากไปเลยก็ได้

แต่เพราะการ์ดเนอร์ก็เชื่อเหมือนที่ โธมัส เจฟเฟอร์สันเชื่อว่า คำว่า Happiness ที่ถูกต้อง น่าจะเป็น Happiness ที่มีคำว่า Pursuit วางอยู่ข้างหน้า เขาจึงไม่เคยเลิกแสวงหา

และหากสิ่งที่หวังไว้จะพลิกไปเป็นอีกเรื่องหนึ่ง...มันคงไม่เป็นไรหรอก ในวันที่เธอก็ได้เพียรพยายามต่อสู้และได้ลองเสาะแสวงหาแล้ว

เพราะจะมีใครสักกี่คนที่กล้ายืนหยัดและยืนยันเพื่อ ความรักและความสุข อย่างนี้?

คริส การ์ดเนอร์ หนึ่งคน, ผู้หญิงในหนัง The Road Home หนึ่งคน, มาติลด์แห่ง A Very Long Engagement หนึ่งคน, รวมถึงเธอผู้เชื่อมั่นว่าความรักของเธออยู่ที่นิวยอร์กคนนั้นอีกหนึ่งคน

ในวันเวลาที่ชีวิตผ่านโลกมา 25 ปี เป็นครั้งแรกที่ฉันพบว่าตัวเองชอบคำว่า Happiness และ Love ที่มีคำว่า Pursuit วางอยู่ก่อนหน้า มากกว่าสองคำนั้นที่มีคำว่า is all around ตามหลังอยู่เป็นไหนๆ

ฉันว่าประโยคแรกทำให้หัวใจอิ่มเอมได้มากกว่า

ขณะที่ประโยคหลัง ดูงั้นๆ ...ไม่ช่วยให้เราอยากใฝ่ฝัน และไม่ทำให้หัวใจเต้น

เพราะมีแต่เพียงมนุษย์ที่ตายแล้วเท่านั้น

ที่จะหยุดใฝ่ฝัน และเลิกเต้นระบำ

หลังจากคุยกันเรื่องเกี่ยวกับนิวยอร์ก สามสาวที่ยืนหยัดและยืนยันว่าตัวเองเป็นสาวกซีรี่ย์ Sex and the City ได้ถกกันเรื่อง Destiny ฉันชอบบทสรุปของพวกเราที่ว่า Destiny มีผลกับชีวิตเราแค่ครึ่งหนึ่งเท่านั้น หลังจากนั้นเราต้องทำเอง เพราะถ้ารักแท้ของติ๊กอยู่ที่แคลิฟอร์เนีย แต่ติ๊กนั่งเล่นอยู่เฉยๆ ที่กรุงเทพฯ โดยวันๆ ไม่ทำอะไร ติ๊กจะได้เจอรักแท้ไหม?

อืม... เข้าท่าแฮะ

ว่าแต่ว่า พอจะทายกันได้ไหมว่ารักแท้ของฉันที่อยู่ที่แคลิฟอร์เนีย นี่เป็นใคร ใบ้ให้หน่อยนึงก็ได้ ว่าชื่อขึ้นต้นด้วย J นามสกุลขึ้นต้นด้วย G และเล่นบทเด่นในหนังที่ชื่อเกี่ยวกับภูเขา แต่มีเรื่องราวเกี่ยวกับผู้ชายสองคนที่รักกัน ...ทายยากพอดูอยู่นะนี่ หุหุ

In CONGRESS, July 4, 1776.

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America,

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume, among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed, by their Creator, with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.

He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.

He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.

He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.

He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their Public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.

He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.

He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.

He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.

In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our British brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends.

We, therefore, the Representatives of the United States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do.
